AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D Review: High-End Gaming At A Cheaper Price

Touted as “one of the world’s fastest gaming processors” last year, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D introduced gamers to the new 3D V-Cache technology to provide the ultimate gaming performance without adding any extra cores.

If you are skeptical about buying this one in 2023, then read this review post to assure yourself that you are making the best decision.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D Release Date And Price

The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D is one of the newer AMD Ryzen Zen 4 processors to be released by AMD. This processor was released on most global markets on April 20, 2023. The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D price now is $499.

At the time of its release, AMD stated that it’s “one of the world’s fastest gaming processors” – a statement that was somewhat true. However, that was in 2022. Now, AMD has released a better processor in the form of AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D, while Intel has won the processor market with its new Intel Core i9-13900KS processor that boasts a 6 GHz max clock speed.

This processor is part of its lineup of processors containing the AMD 3D V-Cache technology that significantly bumps up the L3 cache memory of processors. This allows them to get 15% more performance with lesser cores and threads made specifically for gaming.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D Benchmarks

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D Benchmarks

Using Benchmarking Tools to test the power of a processor or graphics card is mandatory to understand its capabilities.

For this AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D review, this is the AMD testing setup that I have used:

ProcessorAMD Ryzen7 5800X3D
Graphics CardNVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 10 GB
RAM32 GB DDR5 (2 x 16 GB)
Storage512 GB SSD
MotherboardGigabyte X670 AORUS Elite AX

However, to provide a better benchmarking comparison, I have also tested other competing processors alongside it as well. Here are the benchmark test results of the AMD Ryzen 7 58000X3D CPU alongside other competing processors:

BenchmarkRyzen 7 5800X3Di9-13900 KSi5-13600KRyzen 9 7950X3D

3DMark Time Spy12,57520,35813,00116,175

As you can see from the benchmark tests above, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D has a performance that is comparable to Intel’s 13th gen Core i5-13600K. However, since the 13600K was released a quarter after the 5800X3D, it performs better.

But here comes an interesting factor not stated in the table above – the price and thermals of the processors. While the 13900Ks and the 7950X3D are definitely newer high-end processors that cost a lot more, the 13600K and the previous generation  Intel Core i9-12900K are their closest competitors.

Therefore, in terms of competition, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is more expensive than both the 13600K ($320) and the 12900K ($420). While both of these processors are better performers overall (except for gaming, where Ryzen still triumphs), they also consume way more power.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D Performance

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D Performance

Regarding performance, it’s tough to measure it since as long as you can do your tasks without hitches.

Therefore, when I conducted my day-to-day work, like writing articles, editing videos, and using Photoshop, everything seemed super smooth. Everything on Photoshop and Premiere Pro worked lag-free. Plus, I was also surprised how fast this processor exported a 4K video I was editing in a minute!

Therefore, for your normal productivity and creative tasks, this processor is worth the price. It’s far better than the

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D Gaming Performance

When it comes to gaming, it seems like the additional L3 cache memory was made for it. Therefore, here are the frames I got while playing these games at the highest settings with ray tracing turned on.

GameRyzen 7 5800X3Di9-13900KSi9-13600KRyzen 9 7950X
Metro: Exodus105137101138

Watchdogs: Legion10213598136
Cyberpunk 2077128192118189
F1 22298369277403

As you can see from the frame rates above, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D outperforms the older Ryzen 5 7600X and the Intel Core i5-11600K by a huge margin. Even when compared to its competitors like the 13600K and the 12900K, it still performs better in gaming.

However, compared to better processors like the i7-13700K and the i9-13900K, it falls short in productivity tasks (but not gaming). However, games will be happy with this processor as long as it’s paired. with an RTX 4000 series processor or a higher-end RTX 3000 processor.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D Alternatives

If you are someone who wishes to buy a new processor for their computer setup, I guess you are a gamer if you want something so high-end.

1. Intel Core i7-13700K

Price: $400

If you want a processor that is similarly priced (well, $99 less) than the Ryzen 7 58 towards the end of 2022 before the other and features 8 cores and 24 threads with a 5.4 GHz max clock speed.

2. Intel Core i9-12900KS

Price: $420

If gaming is not your top priority, then I recommend buying the cheaper i9-12900KS. While it’s the previous generation, it packs a lot of punch for its processing speed, which is higher than the Ryzen 7 5800X when conducting non-gaming tasks. This processor has 16 cores with 24 threads, along with a max clock speed of 5.5 GHz.

3. AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D

Price: $649

The Ryzen 9 7950X3D is the latest and best Ryzen processor to feature the AMD 3D V-Cache technology. This processor is a Ryzen Zen 4 processor that requires the new AM5 socket motherboards and DDR5 memory. If you can spend around $150 extra, then this will be a great buy.

4. AMD Ryzen 7600X

Price: $199

The AMD Ryzen 7600X is another amazing AMD Ryzen processor that is cheaper than the 5800X3D (by half) and is slightly weaker than it as well. While this processor was released after the 5800X3D, I recommend going for this one if you want a budget gaming setup.

Final Verdict: Is The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D A Good Processor To Buy In 2023?

If you want to buy a powerful gaming processor in 2023 for under $500, then the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D will be a great buy for you. Its 3D V-Cache technology for humongous L3 cache is primarily catered toward gamers.

In addition to providing a power consumption of 105 watts – lower than modern Intel processors – this is a great processor overall. However, non-gamers will be better off with an Intel i9-12900KS or an i7-13700K instead.

ProsCons
• This is a powerful gaming processor.
• The price is low compared to its performance.
• Low power consumption.
• It will work with DDR4 RAM sticks.
• Does not require the new AM5 socket
• It cannot be overclocked, unlike other Ryzen processors.
• You have to purchase an additional cooler.
• Fails to beat Intel on all tasks except for gaming.
