- Netflix has plans to foray more into cloud gaming to develop more new games.
- So far, they have only developed a handful of mobile games playable through Netflix.
- Now, they have decided to work on games for more platforms, like PCs and consoles.
The gaming industry is at an all-time high now, as analysts expect the value of this industry to reach the $350 billion mark in the next five years. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that streaming giant Netflix has decided to venture into this industry as well.
Netflix ventured into cloud gaming two years ago by allowing Netflix subscribers to play games on its platform. Right now, Netflix users can play many games from their mobile phones. These include various action games, adventure games, and many more for casual gamers to enjoy.
However, there lies the main limitation of Netflix games – all its games are mobile games. Therefore, if you are using Netflix from your PC, console, or TV – you are out of luck.
This is where Netflix has decided to focus its attention – creating games for all platforms Netflix is available on. With the growth of cloud gaming in the form of Xbox Cloud Gaming, lots of opportunities are popping up.
Regarding this new opportunity, this is what Netflic’s Head of External Games, Leanne Loombe, has to say:
We feel like there is a really big opportunity with Cloud to create a certain type of game experience that really is tailored to Netflix on TV. Changing based on the platform will absolutely happen when we start to expand the cloud service into more regions and bring more games. Those games will be different creatively to the mobile games that we’re making. Sometimes the games we launch on Netflix will be across mobile TV and PC through the cloud. And sometimes there’ll be a cloud game that’s playable on TV, and it will be really tailored to that experience.
This is why Netflix has started to hire PC game developers. In addition, they have roped in Bungie veteran Joseph Staten as their new Creative Director of Netflix Games.
He has said that once they launch platform-specific games on Netflix, they will make an algorithm to suggest these games to users based on the platform they are using Netflix on.
