Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Release Date Announced For February 29, 2024

Final Fantasy VII fanatics, rejoice! Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake and the second part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, was finally unveiled at the PlayStation State of Play event that took place yesterday. We have finally got a release date for it – February 29, 2024.
The original Final Fantasy VII game came out way back in 1997 for the PS1. Developed by Square Enix, the game was a critical and commercial success during its time and is still widely regarded as one of the greatest JRPG (Japanese RPG) games of all time.
The game was considered a masterpiece for its deep gameplay system, characters, story, lore, and 3D polygonal models (which may look ugly now but were breathtaking two decades ago). It revolutionized the JRPG genre forever, a feat accepted even today as most modern JRPG games still follow the same gameplay formula.
However, after two decades of its release, Square-Enix decided to remake the completely from the group up. They do so by releasing Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) for the PS4 and PS5 (and later on PC). Gone is the tactical turn-based gameplay, replaced with a more modern tactical real-time action hack-n-slash gameplay.
While boomers reading this might have played this game already back in the day, I would still recommend giving this a shot for nostalgia with a breath of fresh air. Its story of a band of eco-terrorists (AVALANCHE) trying to defeat a megacorporation and its elite soldier is still an amazing story to experience.
Game director Naoki Hamaguchi has explained that this game will be fully open-world, unlike the prequel (FF7 Remake). In addition, it will have over 100 hours worth of content from a long story campaign and an equally large number of side quests as well.
I cannot wait to play this game when it comes out! However, I (and the entire FF7 community) were disappointed by the fact that you cannot transfer your FF7 Remake save file. Here’s what Hamagucji had to say:
We have announced that the Final Fantasy VII remake project will be a trilogy and that each entry will be a standalone game in its own right. Because of this, each game’s balancing is done independently, and a player’s levels and abilities will not carry over from one game to the next. However, we have created some special bonuses for fans who played the previous game, allowing them to start with a little something extra.
