Headlines:
- Processor manufacturer MediaTek to pair up with Meta to create new processors with AI functionalities.
- These new processors will take full advantage of the power of Meta’s Llama 2 AI platform.
- The new processors will be specifically made for Android smartphones.
With the “AI tools race” going strong in 2023, Meta’s Llama 2 AI chatbot is set to rival the likes of ChatGPT. Google Bard and BingChat. While still in its developmental stages, the Meta Llama 2 AI chatbot will soon be made available to all users.
However, Llama 2 will be an open-source AI tool. This means that anyone with the source code will be able to modify it and create AI applications with it.
However, Taiwanese smartphone processor manufacturer MediaTek is reportedly coordinating with Meta to create new processors that can harness the power of Llama 2’s AI capabilities from the get-go.

Here, the processors will allow smartphones to build a computing ecosystem that will easily boost the development of AI tools and functionalities on smartphones. These processors are expected to be announced sometime by the end of this year.
Not only will MediaTek develop such processors for smartphones, but they will soon be developed for other smart devices like IoT devices, vehicles, and other edge devices. Such processors will pose a significant development in the industry, and we are all rooting for good changes to take place.
Here’s what JC Hsu, Corporate Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Wireless Communications Business Unit at MediaTek, has said about this development:
Every MediaTek-powered 5G smartphone SoC shipped today is equipped with APUs designed to perform a wide variety of generative AI features, such as AI Noise Reduction, AI Super Resolution, AI MEMC, and more. Presently, most Generative AI processing is performed through cloud computing; however, MediaTek’s use of Llama 2 models will enable generative AI applications to run directly on-device as well. Doing so provides several advantages to developers and users, including seamless performance, greater privacy, better security and reliability, lower latency, the ability to work in areas with little to no connectivity, and lower operation costs.
